Victory in NC House District 41!

Modified: 11/08/2006

(Raleigh, NC) – NARAL Pro-Choice North Carolina, the political arm of the pro-choice movement, celebrated the victory of pro-choice candidate Ty Harrell in North Carolina House District 41 in Wake County. This win served as the highlight of the organization’s campaign program, which included grassroots mobilization at phone banks and direct mail expenditures.

“This pro-choice victory affirms that voters are tired of the divisive attacks on a woman’s right to choose and want lawmakers who will stand up for the values of freedom, privacy, and personal responsibility. Ty understands that prevention should be our first priority,” said Melissa Reed, executive director of NARAL Pro-Choice North Carolina. “He supports responsible sex education and greater access to health care, including birth control and family planning services. This election shows that North Carolinians continue to reject the out-of-touch policies of anti-choice politicians like Russell Capps. They want leaders who come to the table with commonsense solutions that improve healthcare for families and stop government from interfering in personal, private decisions.”

NARAL Pro-Choice North Carolina has more than 350 activists and members in this legislative district and thousands more identified pro-choice voters. During an independent expenditure campaign, NARAL Pro-Choice North Carolina turned out the pro-choice vote by phoning over 2,000 pro-choice voters and contributing dozens of volunteers to canvasses and get-out-the-vote efforts in this district. This targeted electoral work was complemented with an additional 600 mail pieces and multiple email alerts sent statewide on behalf of other pro-choice candidates.

"We couldn't have worked harder to elect Ty Harrell,” said Reed. "We look forward to working with him next legislative session on common-sense, pro-choice legislation."

Other key races that NARAL Pro-Choice North Carolina played an active role in were Senator Julia Boseman’s victory in New Hanover County and Representative Rick Glazier’s victory in Cumberland County.
