Sex Education Letter to the Editor in News and Observer

Modified: 08/19/2003

Support for sex ed

Regarding the Aug. 11 AP article headlined "Statewide, few parents support expanded sex ed": It's very strange that an article with a headline proclaiming that "few parents support expanded sex ed" would give so little evidence to back up that claim.

On the contrary, the article gave us evidence of exactly why expanded sex ed is necessary: 61 percent of high school students are sexually active statewide and our state has an above-average teenage pregnancy rate.

In fact, a survey by WTVD-ABC Channel 11 found that 67 percent of Wake County residents believe their children should have comprehensive sex ed, yet Wake County does not offer a comprehensive curriculum.

While it's true that North Carolina has no guidelines requiring comprehensive sex ed options -- and we have the record of teenage pregnancies and STDs to back it up -- this is merely a sign of a sex ed program badly out of touch with the times and the people.
