NARAL Pro-Choice America Foundation Launches Multi-Million Dollar National Education & Mobilization Campaign

Highlight Growing Threat To The Right To Choose

Washington, DC–Recognizing the growing threat to a woman’s right to choose and a women’s right to privacy in making medical and reproductive decisions, NARAL Pro-Choice America president Kate Michelman announced a multi-million dollar national television and grassroots campaign by the NARAL Pro-Choice America Foundation to mobilize pro-choice America.

“President Bush is about to become the first President in our nation’s history to criminalize safe abortion procedures. The likelihood that there will be vacancies on the Supreme Court in a matter of weeks is extremely high,” said Michelman. “The moment is upon pro-choice America to come together to save our liberties and our constitutional freedoms. These ads are designed to mobilize pro-choice America and tell pro-choice Republicans, Democrats and independents that ‘There’s still time to protect your right to choose.’”

The ads are part of NARAL Pro-Choice America Foundation’s Choice for America (CFA) campaign, a multi-million dollar, multi-market, multi-year grassroots and public education campaign that seeks to mobilize pro-choice America to act on their pro-choice beliefs.

The ad campaign will begin airing Sunday June 8th nationally and will be supported by a strong internet campaign. Beginning mid-June, the first phase of the statewide spots will run in Iowa, Oregon and Wisconsin.

The new spot moves backward through time, opening with a professional woman walking down the street in reverse slow-motion. Her gaze turns in horror to see a newspaper headline that reads, “ABORTION OUTLAWED!” The events continue to unfold in reverse chronological order as the spot reveals political vignettes. The spot closes with the woman being handed an action alert from a NARAL Pro-Choice America volunteer encouraging her to get involved to protect the right to choose and a voiceover saying, “There’s still time to protect your right to choose.”

Several 15 second spots support the 30 second lead piece and communicate current and very real threats to the right to choose, such as the narrow margin on the U.S. Supreme Court for the right to choose and the more than 300 anti-choice laws passed in the states in recent years.

“Together these spots serve as a stark reminder of what could happen if we don’t stop this tidal wave of anti-choice activity that is emanating right out of our own White House,” said NARAL Pro-Choice America President Kate Michelman. “The future health, safety and freedom of women in this country is in our hands. With anti-choice leadership in Congress and the White House, and a razor-thin margin in the US Supreme Court, pro-choice Americans must act today to protect their rights tomorrow.”
